Ha Noi goes 'dingbats' at exhibition

HA NOI -- Dingbats Brazil, an exhibition of Brazilian graphic design, is now being held at the Viet Nam Fine Arts Museum. The exhibition features a decade of digital pictorial alphabets - or dingbats - in 35 works by 22 prominent, contemporary designers.

Sponsored by the Brazilian Embassy in Ha Noi, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Viet Nam Fine Arts Museum, Dingbats Brazil presents a little-known aspect of Brazilian graphic arts in the hope of promoting understanding and a dialogue among artists and the public, said Brazilian Ambassador to Viet Nam Joao de Mendonca Lima Neto.

Selected by graphic designer Bruno Porto in 2006 while he was the co-ordinator of illustration studies for the Visual Arts Institute of Rio de Janeiro's UniverCidade, the exhibition also forms a chronicle of Brazilian culture through icons of music, religion, arts, sport and cuisine. Many dingbats are pictograms - tiny pictures of churches, airplanes, skiers, telephones and symbols used in tourist industry.

In recent decades, Brazilian graphic design has become increasingly popular in Latin America, Europe and Africa. This decade, a small but dedicated group of Brazilian designers has sought to include Asia in this landscape, promoting Brazilian graphic arts through exhibitions, magazine articles, workshops and lectures, said Neto.

"We don't want to present what you and the world have already known about Brazil like football or samba," he added. "We want to introduce something you didn't have any idea about."

The exhibition runs through August 30 at 66 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street in Ha Noi.

| The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam website also announced the exhibition, along an excerpt of the Cryptocomics dingbats poster.

Images of those thee posters were reproduced on many local news websites, in Vietnamese or English languages. Since the copy was almost always the same, above you may check logos of some of the sites, diligently collected by Marcia Fiani.

Hong Kong bilingual magazine 360ºDesign published a special issue dedicated to Brazilian design in July 2010, featuring the works of a few selected graphic artists and product designers, as well as articles on Brazillian design associations, exhibitions, awards and education.

Dárias also wrote the introductory text (in Spanish, roughly translated) displayed in the entrance wall:

Our region has distinguished itself in recent years especially by the projection of its values and unstoppable creative virtues. In this sense the visual arts and especially the contemporary graphic design shine with its own light in the environment of visual literacy, a key part of the communication of our times.

The typographical possibilities and their constructional and formal characteristics, as represented by the Latin American novel iconographic sources, are heirs of a lush, rich, and powerful visual tradition, which while still being pragmatic help represent our reality, through near-endemic visual forms, but also universal in its total perspective. This sample of Brazilian dingbats are a new contribution of the Latin American contemporary communication talent, which we host thanks to the Brazilian Graphic Designers Association, represented by our colleague and designer Bruno Porto.
This exhibition which is part of the programming of the 4th Latin American Biennial Tipos Latinos 2010 will undoubtedly enrich our visual repertoire.
