O conto, baseado em O Artista da Carne, que saiu na coletânea Interface com o Vampiro, foi reescrito totalmente em inglês por mim mesmo e submetido a várias revistas lá fora. Quem levou foi a Nautilus, da Romênia, pilotada pelo editor e escritor Michael Haulica. Na tradução em romeno, o título ficou sendo Vampirul si geneticianul (o parabola). Não acho muito provável que algum dos meus leitores leia romeno (eu mesmo leio muito mal), mas queria compartilhar essa alegria com vocês.

Meu mais sincero obrigado ao Michael e ao amigo Horia-Nicola Ursu, o Ugly Bad Bear (que de feio e mau não tem nada, é gente boa toda vida), que leu o conto e o apresentou ao Michael. E ao tradutor, Radu Ganea.

O que me salva é que minha dedicação aos livros não é menor. A quantidade de livros que estou lendo é grande e vai gerar uma boa quantidade de resenhas muito em breve, algumas para o The Fix (tem uma saindo por esses dias), outras para este blog, outras para um outro blog que está surgindo (pronto, falei). Provavelmente até o fim desta semana ou o começo da próxima estarei abrindo os trabalhos no outro - sem abandonar este nem um pouco, ressalto.

Enquanto isso, lendo os seguintes livros:

The Road, Cormac McCarthy - eu não levava muita fé nesse escritor, muito embora o filme baseado em seu livro No Country for Old Men tenha levado o Oscar, coisa e tal. Mas ontem achei o pocket na Cultura a um preço ridículo de tão barato e comprei. Resultado: quase não dormi esta noite. Não conseguia parar. Extremamente bem escrito. Uma história pós-apocalipse nuclear feita para figurar entre as melhores do gênero, como Damnation Alley, de Roger Zelazny, e The Memoirs of a Survivor, de Doris Lessing.

The Immortalists, de David M. Friedman - um dos melhores livros de não-ficção que li nos últimos tempos, que conta uma história interessante e assustadora ao mesmo tempo: a parceria inusitada entre o herói da aviação norte-americana Charles Lindbergh, responsável pela primeira travessia do Atlântico em 1927, e o cientista francês Alexis Carrel, Prêmio Nobel de Medicina de 1912. O objetivo da parceria: buscar a imortalidade através da perfusão de órgãos, ou seja, a manutenção da vida dos órgãos internos do corpo humano, inicialmente fora do corpo. Um projeto algo frankensteiniano, iniciado em 1930 e que vai se tornando mais assustador quando Lindbergh assume publicamente seu apoio à Alemanha nazista, às vésperas de uma Segunda Guerra Mundial que ele jurava aos militares americanos que jamais aconteceria. Contraditório como todo ser humano, Lindbergh era anti-semita e acreditava na superioridade da "raça" branca (coloco raça entre aspas porque esse conceito já caiu por terra cientificamente), mas ao mesmo tempo era capaz de gestos desprendidos e de uma grande dedicação em projetos que tinham motivação de ajuda humanitária. Foi ele, por exemplo, quem aperfeiçoou um modelo de centrífuga que até hoje é utilizado em laboratórios clínicos, e seu método de perfusão permitiu a evolução de procedimentos científicos para transplantes. Lendo para pesquisa, juntamente com o excelente The Plot Against America, de Philip Roth, uma história alternativa que narra o que poderia ter acontecido aos judeus dos EUA caso Lindbergh tivesse concorrido à presidência em 1940 (isso nunca aconteceu). Roth é sempre uma ótima leitura.

Continuo lendo Vellum, de Hal Duncan, além da biografia de Nietzsche escrita por Rüdiger Safranski, que também é biógrafo de Heidegger. Mais detalhes em breve.

Talk about Brazilian Post Office efficency! Even today, Labor Day in Brazil, I just received a package from Random House containing a book I was eagerly awaiting for: Felix Gilman´s Thunderer. Just in case you don´t know the guy, that´s his first novel. But he has a very nice, though unfortunately very short, participation in The New Weird: the passage where he shows a police constable reading a pulp magazine and pratically recreates the genre in those few pages just made me look for more stuff from him. I´ll start reading at one. A review is due soon. Thanks to Felix Gilman and his publicist, the efficient Anna Crowe, for the book.

Richard Morgan é um nome que eu sempre recomendo a amigos e editores. Seus três (até o momento) livros com as aventuras pós-cyber de Takeshi Kovacs, ex-Enviado da ONU no século XXV numa sociedade onde as pessoas trocam de corpos como quem troca de roupas e que alterna a cada livros papéis como os de detetive, mercenário e até criminoso, estão entre os mais criativos deste começo de milênio. Altamente recomendado. Ainda não li Black Man, mas se tiver um décimo da qualidade dos citados acima, já mereceu o prêmio. Leiam correndo esse cara.

A maioria dos contos, noveletas e novelas já está disponível na Web (as revistas estão disponibilizando os contos finalistas gratuitamente, uma tendência ótima que se confirmou de vez este ano e que eu aplaudo). Periodicamente, continuarei postando resenhas dessas histórias aqui - e também em outro blog, que está pintando nos próximos dias, aguardem.

The story of how Gerrold, a gay, single SF writer adopted an abused child and his struggle to bond with him is very touching. Everyone who has a child, of his/her own or adopted, should read it. It´s also a fun story - I mean it´s a story narrated in a very good-humored way. You can´t help laughing sometimes more than you can´t help shedding some tears.

That story also reminded me of a very brief moment in which my life almost touched theirs. I attended the 1995 WorldCon in Glasgow, when Gerrold won the Hugo for the novelette version of The Martian Child. It was my first international convention (it still is, though this situation is due to change soon), and I was so thrilled to meet so many writers I enjoyed reading (like Mike Resnick, with whom I had a great time at the kaffeeklatsch, and Gregory Benford, Geoffrey A. Landis, Iain M. Banks, and Robert Silverberg) that I hardly could even speak (that temporary inability made Terry Pratchett have some good laughs at me when I tried to talk to him).

All in all, that experience was very important to me - exhilarating and fun. I only have two regrets: in the first day of the convention, I was still so amazed I couldn´t bring myself to walk a few steps and talk to John Brunner, which was talking to some friends liks Hal Clement and Forrest J. Ackerman, and also seemed to be in a very good mood. Sadly, later that night, he suffered a massive heart attack and died. To say it was a terrible loss is an understatement.

The second is this: I was near a hot-dog booth at the food court when I saw Gerrold with his son David. It was in the last day, just after the award ceremony. Gerrold was holding the spaceship statuette and buying something for him and his son to eat. For a moment, I felt like going down there just to tell him how much I enjoyed some of his stories, like his classic Star Trek story The Trouble with Tribbles. But I hadn´t read the winning novellette yet, and I was afraid of being inconvenient. So, I didn´t.

I hope he can read these words someday (that´s the good side of the Net; maybe he will) and know that, as the poem of Vladimir Mayakovsky goes, once there was a happy man in Brazil. That was how his book made me feel.
