walls notebook: variadas superfícies de nova york para rabiscar.

o povo do coletivo improv everywhere encenou um vernissage no metrô da 23rd street, em manhattan. tinha open bar, recepcionista, cellista e marchands bem vestidos. a arte em questão eram as sinalizações do metrô, o graffiti das paredes e os objetos ao redor que já fazem parte do dia-a-dia local.

como exemplo, o neatorama cita a descrição presa a um telefone público local:

this homage to the urgency of communication is meant to highlight the recent necessity, from instant to instant, to maintain the potential for instantaneous, world-wide contact from any location, at any time. that a conversation from such a location would be abruptly interrupted by an arriving train suggests the artist's intent to lampoon the perceived dependence on telecommunication.

last night before a benefit he was scheduled to participate in at a loft in soho, the street artist known as poster boy was arrested by an undercover cop. poster boy was listed on a flyer for the event, a festival put on for friends we love, a series of videos documenting the process of a dozen different artists, including poster boy, who talked with us just last week.

photographer jim kiernan tipped us off to the arrest. he arrived at event at broadway and howard street to meet up with poster boy around 7 p.m., but police had already arrived after spotting the poster boy's name on the flyer. kiernan says, "there was an undercover cop on the block and they came and picked him up. as far as i know, he's still in central booking right now and waiting to get in front of a judge... it's the second time they've gotten him."

there doesn't appear to be one specific piece or incident that triggered the arrest, but kiernan wonders if it might have something to do with poster boy's recent move above ground, taking his "photochop" style and applying it to a van wagner billboard in brooklyn. he told us, "he's f*ckin with money. he's cutting up advertising. advertisers aren't happy about that. and i'm sure the van wagner people weren't thrilled."

friends are waiting for poster boy to go before a judge and have bail set with hopes that it will happen today, but fearing that it may not be until monday. collaborating artists ellis g. and aakash nihalani photochopped up a couple of impromptu pieces at last night's event declaring "free poster boy!" and "nypd=joke". when asked if he thought the arrest would deter poster boy, kiernan said, "it definitely won't--no way. his whole concept is that it's a movement. it's bigger than him."

de repente o pensamento do cara é mais original que o de banksy:

você não se descobre artista. você trabalha e desenvolve uma forma específica de se expressar, tal qual um dançarino ou um carpinteiro. talvez eu prefira ser chamado de ativista urbano. ruas nos levam à vida real, um elemento que não pode ser encontrado em telas, um pedaço de liberdade. não existem molduras limitadas nas ruas, não existem bordas.

a camuflagem nas ruas pode ser melhor explicada no meu vídeo survival wk camo. é um experimento interativo misturado à paisagem urbana, o disfarce das pessoas sem-teto. infelizmente, a sociedade ignora a maioria dos sem-teto, deixando-os convenientemente despercebidos (...) ativistas urbanos devem se misturar ao sistema, de modo a continuar trabalhando e não serem descobertos.

minha produtividade verbal/ visual amansou bastante nesse período. muita festa, muito álcool, muitas noites. e desde o dia dois os fogos de artifício não páram de estourar.

as sete novidades não são tudo. duas das colagens do período não foram publicadas. isso porque foram feitas para serem expostas em evento de street art/ skate/ música que vai rolar em abril na lagoa. só chegam à internet quando passar a data.

urban art is art at its most accessible, available in the public arena for universal appreciation. however, by definition it is also an ephemeral art form, often disappearing as fast as it appears. by transposing their images from street wall to canvas, urban artists are now creating a permanent legacy without compromising the vitality of their art form and it is these works which are currently taking the market by storm.
